This is a story I don’t share much, unless someone asks. Usually people are extremely curious at my name and how I got it.
Picture this (cues shorty from Golden Girls), early 90s and a chocolate girl from Cleveland,Ohio was born. I was the first granddaughter of my maternal Grandmother. And I was to be named Srebrenica. Far from average, yet still makes you go hmmmm
My late Grandmother Marilyn found my name while browsing the newspaper. Yes, the newspaper. So let me give you a little history: Srebrenica is a small town in the country Bosnia and Herzegovina. During this time (1992-1995), the Bosian War was occuring, which unfortunately led to a horrible ethnic genocide in this town.
Known as the Srebrenica Massacre, more than 8,000 Bosniaks sensely lost their lives due to religion and politics. As a result of this many families were forced to vacate to ensure their own safety, which many survivors are affected to this day. My thoughts are always with those who’s lives were lost and those families who survived and still are affected to this day…
Yes, that took a very deep dark turn, but these are the facts. I view my name as a definition of strength and perseverance, being able to see things through. Growing up, I enjoyed being known as the girl with the “extremely unique name”. As an adult, I’ve also had my fair share of ridiculous comments such as “you must’ve had a hard time learning how to spell that”.
I plan to visit the town of Srebrenica, you know, one of those bucket list things. I am so grateful to have a name like mine, and have such a unique story behind it. Ever got the full scoop on how you got your name? What makes you unique?
